Wimpy supports 94.7 Highveld Stereo's #947NoTalkTuesday
Never before has any South African radio station gone on air without presenters for a whole day and never before have listeners been put in the driver's seat to determine the content for that day. Sounds impossible, right? Well, not when it comes to 94.7 Highveld Stereo and Wimpy, who will be doing just that with their #947NoTalkTuesday project, aiming to set a new on air precedent.
However as with all precedents, there is certain criteria which need to be met. In this case, 94. 7 Highveld Stereo embarked on an exciting objective to grow their Twitter following to 100 000 fans, with Wimpy on board to support them. Thanks to you, this was achieved today and on Tuesday the 22nd April, the station is going to go DJ-free on #947NoTalkTuesday. You can play a part in calling the shots on the day as listeners' tweets will decide the music content. Furthermore, choosing your favourite song automatically enters you into the competition where you stand a chance to win a share of R90 000 in Wimpy vouchers with the added bonus of getting to hear the hit you love played on air by your request.
"This is a great initiative. It is a novel and exciting way of engaging with followers and allows for great interaction by incorporating different mediums of communication, generating interest on multimedia platforms," says Pondo Belot, Marketing Manager, Wimpy.
Listeners have been actively engaging with the campaign, impacting on Highveld's Twitter following which has seen numbers already increasing from around the 94 000 mark to 100 000 in the past two weeks since launching this fun campaign. "This has perfect synergy with the Wimpy philosophy of enjoying every moment; clearly listeners are embracing this ethos of the initiative," says Belot.
The project which has created hype on the South African social media scene, is receiving attention from high profiled social media figures such as well-known Social Media Consultant, Tanya Kovarsky. "I love the concept of the 94.7 Highveld Stereo and Wimpy #947NoTalkTuesday campaign. For me, it has a few key elements. Firstly, it has a catchy hashtag that's not too long. Secondly, it's for a limited period of one day only, which focusses attention on the project, drawing people to further interact on the social media platform; and thirdly 94.7 is adopting a fun, creative way of trying to increase their followers. They have a refreshingly open and relaxed attitude, rather than relying on 'please follow us' to drive this number," says Kovarsky.
The project has an accessible simplicity, easy on time and effort, building on the loyalty of listeners who now have had a personal stake in helping to achieve the 100 000 mark. "I'm very keen to see how it plays out. Plus I'm already lining up my favourite songs for the 22nd," says Kovarsky.
"Wimpy is delighted to be part of this innovative venture, engaging listeners in an innovative way, giving them freedom, at least to the airwaves of the city, as listeners take to the air on 22 April, ushering in a new moment in radio broadcast history in South Africa while fulfilling a worthwhile goal in the process," concludes Belot.
