Metro Coordinator at Home Affairs in Cape Town, Sam Plaatjies says smart card IDs are now available to all citizens excluding those with permanent residency and naturalised citizens.
Those applying for a smart card need to produce their green South African ID book as well as a R140 processing fee. If you have lost your green ID book, you must have an affidavit which can be obtained at police stations.
The R140 fee does not apply to pensioners and first time applicants.
