Meet Nneile Nkholise, the woman using 3D tech to help breast cancer survivors

A young mechanical engineering technologist from the Free State is helping breast cancer survivors reclaim their lives.

Nneile Nkholise is the founder of Joburg-based iMedTech Group, which makes affordable breast prosthesis for women who have undergone a mastectomy.

iMedTech Group uses 3D printing technology to produce prosthetic devices that help women regain their confidence and sense of self after the traumatic surgery.

Nkholise says she started using 3D printing technology in 2013 while doing research for her Master's degree.

iMedTech Group uses 3D printing to create the moulds and cast silicone inside to create the final breast prosthesis.

She says she has always wanted to help contribute in some way, to better the lives of women affected by breast cancer.

Nkholise explains that the 3D tech is a solution to the prohibitive costs of reconstructive surgery and other prosthetic devices on the market.

She says the prosthesis is more accessible to people from all economic backgrounds, with prices ranging from R900.

iMedTech Group offers both standard breast prosthesis sizes and customised prosthesis for patients.

She hopes to achieved her initiative, to 3D print 1000 prostheticbreasts for 1000 mastectomy patients, by October this year.

I have always had a passion for the breast cancer cause.
