No more swiping without sweating! Discovery Vitality introduces new swipe system

Rewards programme Discovery Vitality is working on a plan to ensure that you sweat for your points.

The health programme has piloted a new tag system at the exit points in a bid to crack down on fake gym visits at a few fitness clubs.

Vitality members can earn 100 points per gym swipe, without actually working out because there is no way to monitor a member's activity inside the facility.

Some users are known to enter the gym for a "fake swipe", use the restroom, surf the internet, buy a smoothie or exit immediately.

The programme's Dr Craig Nossel says fake gym visits are conducted by a small portion of Vitality members.

The gym issue is actually small, it's in the realms of 1% or 2%.

The new system will monitor whether members use the facility for at least 30 minutes, which guarantees them 100 points.

Dr Nossel insists that the new system being tested is not a punitive measure, but rather an effort to encourage genuine fitness and exercise.

This isn't about policing fraud, as much as it's about encouraging positive behaviour.
