Netflix's first African Original series premiered this week - Queen Sono is a spy action drama starring Pearl Thusi in the titular role.
Channel24 entertainment journalist Nikita Coetzee gives the lowdown on the exciting home-grown series created by Kagiso Lediga and Tamsin Andersson’s production house, Diprente Films.
The fact that it features 37 locations is among the many highlights she lists.
So you're not actually only getting a look at South Africa but you're seeing places like Zanzibar and Kenya and different parts of the continent.Nikita Coetzee, Entertainment journalist - Channel24
It's the spy genre and we don't see a lot of that locally. What's really cool is that it touches a lot on politics and of course focuses on Queen's personal life as well, so there's a bit of everything in it... Bringing in comedians [like Rob van Vuuren] just added a different element to the show as well.Nikita Coetzee, Entertainment journalist - Channel24
Coetzee notes that Lediga really wanted the series to be believable and says the team and cast certainly pulled it off.
Things like explosions and those fight scenes... Pearl, who plays Queen and actress Kate Liqourice in the role of Katharina, the antagonist in the show... their fight scenes are just incredible... they worked with an amazing stunt choreographer...Nikita Coetzee, Entertainment journalist - Channel24
Pearl actually told us the story of how they would nap on the floor in between scenes and how intense it was that, afterwards, they would go back to their hotel rooms and draw long baths and add bath salts just to try and heal...Nikita Coetzee, Entertainment journalist - Channel24
She reveals that the series ends with a cliff hanger and if there is a follow-up viewers woud be excited to see what happens next.
